NO SCHOOL FRIDAY

4/27/11 - 6th Grade School of the Wild Reminders!!!!!

With there being no school Friday, I am fearful of weekend brain freeze! So here's an early reminder of what you need for the week of School for the Wild at MacBride (this is from the handout you received recently):

Daily Student Supplies for the University of Iowa Macbride School of the Wild Fieldtrip Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday

A sack lunch and a drink will be needed Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

• Students must wear long pants because of the ticks, prairie grass, and poison ivy. It is helpful if the students wear layers of old clothing, because the weather can change during the day.

Students should wear old shoes or boots. Please bring an extra pair of socks and an extra pair of old shoes because we will get wet and muddy. It is helpful to have an extra pair of old shoes to change into.

• Students should wear a hat or bandana because of the ticks. They should bring sunscreen to prevent sunburn.

Students need to bring a water bottle with them everyday. They will refill this water bottle during the day at the park.

The students need to bring rain gear. The students will participate in activities in the rain. If there is lightning or severe storms, the students will be inside the University of Iowa Macbride Sailing Club Building that is located near the Blue Stem Shelter, on the field campus.

Things Students Should Not Bring Include:

• Anything that is not allowed at school is not allowed at the Macbride Field Campus School of the Wild. Electronic equipment such as iPods, cell phones, game gear electronic systems are not allowed. The Macbride staff and Lemme teachers have cell phones that they will allow students to use. The students are in canoes, wading through water, in mud and hiking off trail and these items could easily be lost or damaged. We encourage students to bring disposable cameras instead of digital cameras.

•Knives, pocketknives, hatchets, axes (any knife/tool) is not permitted according to the ICCSD policy and the Macbride Staff Rules.

• At Macbride fishing poles/fishing nets/tackle boxes will be provided by the Macbride staff for the students to use. This prevents personal fishing gear from being lost or damaged.

• Archery equipment and orienteering equipment will be provided by the Macbride staff for the students to use at Macbride School of the Wild. This prevents personal archery and orienteering equipment from being lost or damaged.

4/22/11 - Mississippi River Museum

Our trip went quite well. The first thing that struck me is that in the two years since we last went, it has DOUBLED in size!! So we only scratched the surface of what was able to be seen and experienced!!

Sounds like a great day trip this summer!

4/18/11 - Addenda to the Dubuque Field Trip Information

They may bring $$$ for the gift shop. However, my personal opinion is that bringing $$ can be problematic in that:

The money can be lost/stolen
Things that are bought can be lost/stolen
Things that are bought are often of low quality
You can’t buy pleasant and educational memories of the trip!

Clarification on "electronics": no cell phones, but mp3 players, game players, iPods, are okay. Don't need texting on the bus.

4/18/11 - Dubuque Field Trip Important Information

Two years ago, we went to the Mississippi River Museum in Dubuque. It was a great trip! The following are some things you need to know for the trip:

1. Students need to be here by 8:20!!!! We learned this the hard way last time. The buses must leave by 8:30!!! I will stay with my van until 8:40, just in case there is a late bus or some other unforeseen problem.

2. Students must bring their lunch. Not very green, but it may be best if they bring disposable items.

3. Students may bring electronics for the bus, BUT there cannot be any inappropriate shenanigans with them. Mrs. Gordon will snatch them up before entering the museum. Consider NOT bringing them, in order to be more social and to enjoy the rolling hills of Iowa out the window more peacefully.

4. We should be home by 3:00.

I am looking forward to a great day.

4/6/11 - Water Only!

I am okay with water bottles in class, just so they are not disruptive.

However, quietly, it has morphed in to other beverages such as giant bottles of gatorade and other kinds of drinks that have become a bit of a distraction.

I will inform the class that they may bring water, but nothing else. If they bring Gatorade (and the like) or other beverages, they certainly can have them with their lunches.

Have a hydrating day,

4/4/11 - Growth and Development Lessons

The next three Thursdays from 12:15-1:00, there will be some Growth and Development lessons.

Dear Fifth/Sixth Grade Parents,

The fifth/sixth grade classes at Lemme School will teach the annual Human Growth and Development unit as part of the ICCSD health curriculum on April 7th, 14th and 21st from 12:15 to 1:00.

Videos on human anatomy and developmental changes in both female and males will be part of the lessons. In one session, the students will view opposite gender videos. During the videos students will be split into boy/girl groups. Mr. Bousfield and Mr. Balke will work with the boys. Mrs. Gordon and Mrs. Hall will work with the girls.

If you would like to preview any of the materials, they will be available to you at school. If you would rather your child not participate in these lessons, please let your child’s teacher know, and we can arrange for alternative activities for your child.

If you have any concerns or questions, feel free to contact us. Thank you for all you do to support your child’s education at Lemme!

Sincerely,

Mrs. McConnaha

Mrs. Gordon

Mrs. Hall

Mr. Balke

Mr. Bousfield
