3/26/12 - Soc.St. Ch. 26 Notes

In chronological order (oldest to current)

1st - Monarchy
One person rules
At first, people chose ruler, then rulers were inherited
Ruled army, made laws, judged, religious leader
Aristocrats: wealthy landowners who advised the king
How did it end?
Aristocrats had the power and the wealth, they realized they could run the place without the king, so they took over!

2nd - Oligarchy
many people rule
wealthy landowners mostly (aristocrats)
big difference between rich and poor
used military to keep power
created unfair laws against the poor
How did it end?
Military came from the ranks of the poor, so they wanted to help them out. Military leaders disobeyed oligarchs

3rd - Tyranny
Take power by force
Not legal
Keep control by force
One person in command
Did help the poor some
How did it end?
The tyrannical rule became too much, too harsh

4th - Democracy
The people rule
Direct Democracy: vote on everything (Ancient Greece)
Representative Democracy: vote for representatives, and they make the decisions (USA 2012)
Assembly: Free men could speak and vote
How did it end?
Didn't - still going strong!
