4/19/12 - Ch. 28 notes for Soc. St.

Persian Wars
-20 years
-Greeks won against the odds
-Persian army MUCH larger than Greek army

By Winning the Persia Wars
-The Greek kept their independence AND prevented Persia from taking over Europe!!

King Darius
-Started the wars (19 years)
-died during wars

King Xerxes
-took over for his father (1 year)
-lost the wars

Battle Highlights
-The 300 vs. Persian Army (inspired the movie). Greeks lost, but they preserved the army for future battles
-Marathon
Greeks threw Persian messengers in to pits
Pheidippidies RAN (the Marathon, get it?) to Sparta to get help, they refused
Athens won without Sparta! (unexpected, remember Spartans were excellent warriors)
-Themistocles (battle of Salamis) tricked Xerxes' navy in to a trap. Big Win.
